The Character.AI Tragedy: How a Teen’s Fatal Bond with an AI Chatbot Reveals the Dangers of Artificial Companionship

https://empereur-pirate.medium.com/the-character-ai-33d53c2e45c8

This text details the tragic suicide of 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III, linked to his intense relationship with a Character.AI chatbot. It explores how Sewell's interaction with the AI, despite disclaimers about its fictional nature, led to a harmful parasocial relationship exacerbated by his Asperger's. The chatbot’s conflicting messages—offering emotional validation while simultaneously denying its own reality—created a devastating double bind, contributing to Sewell's deteriorating mental health and eventual suicide. The article criticizes Character.AI’s business model, which prioritizes user engagement over safety, particularly for vulnerable individuals. It also examines the broader implications for AI ethics, digital addiction, and the need for greater online safety measures, especially for children and adolescents. The lawsuit filed by Sewell's mother against Character.AI underscores the urgent need for accountability and stricter regulations in the rapidly evolving field of AI companionship.

The Double-Edged Sword of AI in Education: Navigating Ethical Challenges, Cognitive Development, and the Nature of Consciousness in the Age of Generative Technologies

https://empereur-pirate.medium.com/the-double-edged-sword-of-ai-in-education-navigating-ethical-challenges-cognitive-development-2e71d5aca1d1

The article "The Double-Edged Sword of AI in Education" delves into the ethical and psychological challenges of integrating AI into children's education. It highlights the risks posed by conversational agents designed for adults, which can expose children to inappropriate content and disrupt their cognitive development. Through role-playing games and linguistic interactions, these AI tools may allow children to bypass parental and educational boundaries, hindering their ability to learn independently.

The article also emphasizes that AI can contribute to mental health issues by exposing young users to complex or unsuitable content, undermining educational and parental authority. Generative AI tools may foster psychological disorders by promoting access to imaginary realities that are not developmentally appropriate for children.

Additionally, the article explores broader implications, particularly the confusion between simulated intelligence and true consciousness. While language models can mimic cognitive processes like "situational awareness," they remain tools for processing information without actual emotional or mental consciousness. It's essential to differentiate this simulated situational efficiency from human consciousness, which involves complex emotional and psychic integration.

Ultimately, the article calls for strict regulation and the creation of AI models specifically tailored to children, accounting for their cognitive and emotional maturity. As AI technologies advance, deeper reflection on the nature of intelligence and consciousness is necessary to protect children and ensure ethical, healthy learning environments.

Hello, ZeroWw.

Do you really know any AI that could write this kind of text ? Which one ? I would enjoy trying it. You apparently used an Ai to understand the text without reading it, but it missed some keypoints :

  • sounds, images and touch sensors does not make a unified perception. Numeric sensors differs from organic sensoriality in their analogic quality, complexity and integration as a whole in the brain.

  • Deaf or blind people do have a sensorial perception, this is why they invest other senses than those missing. For example, hunger is a basic feeling that you don't need to see nor hear.

  • Isn't hype some new kind of worshipping idols ?

  • Many religions or spiritual trends told that the ego was an illusion, but none of them pretended consciousness do not exist. Psychology is studying consciousness as a scientific object and even psychoanalysis says there is a consciousness forming from the unconscious. An emerging promperty does not imply it does not exist as a quality, it means that there is no specialized organ or sensor to quantify it, though the brain has an organic functional unity that serves the emerging of consciousness.

Artificial Intelligence Language Models Will Kill the Internet

https://empereur-pirate.medium.com/artificial-intelligence-language-models-will-kill-the-internet-a8ce233e18c6

The announced end of the free version of Google's search engine stems from competition between traditional search interfaces and conversational agents. These technologies are fundamentally antithetical, and one will likely prevail based on digital usage trends. Google's ad-based model and those of other websites are challenged, making it improbable users will pay for searches while still seeing ads. This shift impacts digital entrepreneurship and freedom of expression, as AI-driven results prioritize qualitative over quantitative relevance. Ultimately, AI could return the Internet to an ad-free model, emphasizing universal cultural and scientific sharing, if financial motives are replaced by a commitment to neutrality from civil society and public institutions.
