I dunno the significance of this, but the model itself thinks it's Mistral 7B. Is there some trick to the training to teach it it's name and history?

There's no significance to this. Models are not self-aware. Base Mistral small barely knows itself (beside the company that made it). Reroll the response, change the samplers and you'll get wildly different answers.
